Stroke

Overview: Stroke is the most common brain disorder in India. It happens when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, usually due to a blood clot or rupture of an artery.

If you have a stroke, your body may not be able to get enough oxygen to all parts of your brain at once. This can cause damage to the part of your brain that controls speech, movement or balance.

Symptoms

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of the body.
  • Tingling or numbness in the face, arms or legs.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one eye, or double vision
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Causes

The primary cause of stroke is blockage of blood flow to the brain. This can occur for various reasons:

1. A blood clot forms in an artery, blocking off one of the major arteries that normally supplies blood to the brain.

2. A weakened blood vessel ruptures and allows blood to leak into the space between the brain and skull.

3. An artery becomes narrow and stiff, making it difficult for blood to flow properly through it.
